Project Description

On Tuesday, June 21, 2011 a current meter was deployed underwater at Picnic Rocks in Marquette. This current meter will report real-time data on water temperature, wave height, longshore current speed, and atmospheric pressure. The meter is only operational during the swimming season. This project is expected to last three years.

The Marquette City Waterfront Safety Task Force spent a lot of time over the past year reviewing reasons why the Picnic Rocks location has increasingly become a swimming hazard. Testimony from the public, as well as a review of water depths at this location, indicate that over the years, erosion, wind, and currents have changed the location and depth of sand bars that formerly spanned the gap between the shoreline and rocks located about the length of a football field just to the east. Over time, the increasing water depth in this area, coupled with the proximity of shoreline and rocks, creates favorable conditions for sheer currents that sweep through the area during high wind and wave events. These often-deadly currents easily trap unsuspecting swimmers and contribute, we believe, to the recent increase in waterfront fatalities in this area.
